Movies to watch with family

Family movie night can be a blessing or a curse. Some houses may very well be on their 74th viewing of Encanto — no one should talk about Bruno, which is fine with you because you’re at the point where you won’t hear the name again for the rest of your life. would like . . (Sorry, Lin-Manuel.) But we’re here to let you in on a secret: It doesn’t have to be. There are plenty of other great family movies to live by, La Familia Madrigal.

That brings us to this list—a collection of new and old (and sometimes very old) titles that make family movie night delicious. It can be hard to break the habit, but sometimes you just have to strap your kids down, give them some chicken nuggets, and declare at the top of your lungs: Feel the rhythm! Feel the poetry! Wake up, it’s bobsled time! It’s your job as a parent to introduce them to the classics, even if it means forcing the TV back. I mean my god, it’s not kids’ movie night. It’s family movie night. You have a say in it. You should also enjoy what is happening on this screen.

So with a hope and a prayer, here are our best recommendations. The movie du jour is good, but there’s no reason we can’t get a little karate kid in there for good measure.

40 under the radar to watch at home with your kids

Many people will be working from home for the next few weeks, and possibly longer, and many will have their children home with them. To help you out, we’ve put together a list of family flicks to help you pass the time – movies that we think parents and kids alike will love. And that might have a nice little lesson to teach before the credits roll.

To keep things interesting, we decided to avoid the obvious choices – recent blockbusters or Disney and Pixar classics that your kids (and you) have probably seen dozens of times. We want to help you discover something new.

With that in mind, our list includes some of the most popular films from the 1980s and 1990s, we think it’s time to introduce your kids (The Goonies, An American Tail, The Neverending Story); Some more recent films that are criminally overlooked (A Monster Calls, Alpha); our own quirky and offbeat crew favorites (The Witches, Cats Don’t Dance); And some absolute classics you might have forgotten about (A Little Princess, The Secret Garden, which framed Roger Rabbit). Plus, we’ve included a handful of documentaries that will entertain – and educate – the whole family (The Biggest Little Farm, Spellbound). And of course there’s a Miyazaki or two.

These are movies that provide thrills, joy and entertainment, but also teach you a moral or life lesson and maybe even debate it, even if it embraces your differences (like boxtrolls do), Facing grief (The Witches, A) Monster Calls), or appreciating the environment (Fern Gully). Not all of them may be as fresh as critics, but they’re worth your and your family’s time.
